Mindful Crafting – Beading for Relaxation

I was really into beading growing up, but returned to it as an adult as a way to relax and unwind.

I enjoy the ritual of looking through my different beads, colours and finishes, playing around with colour combinations for my project. I use an app called Loomerly to design peyote or loom patterns on my laptop, usually while I'm sitting on the lounge of an evening.

I keep a folder on my phone with photos of colour combinations that inspire me – I find these everywhere – in nature, art, food, fashion. I love bringing geometric patterns into my work too, so if I spot an interesting pattern somewhere, I take a pic.

There's something satisfying about translating these inspirations into patterns of tiny beads. My collection of beads has grown over time, and I find myself particularly drawn to those with special finishes that catch the light in unexpected ways. I mostly use Miyuki Delica beads because of their precision and the wide selection of colours and finishes, but I also enjoy bigger beads such as Miyuki Tilas or Squares to mix things up a little.

Things I like about beading for relaxation:

  • Designing my own patterns and choosing the perfect beads
  • The repetitive stitches create a calming rhythm
  • The tactile experience grounds me in the present moment
  • Seeing tangible progress gives a sense of accomplishment

When my brain needs a break from the day, I like to work on detailed projects that require more concentration. This forces my mind to focus solely on the task rather than dwelling on problems.

I've found that different beading techniques suit different moods. When I'm feeling scattered, the structured approach of loom beading helps bring order to my thoughts. If I don't feel like sitting at my desk, I choose peyote beading, so I can curl up on the lounge with a little tray of beads.

What began as a rediscovery of a childhood hobby has become an essential part of my self-care routine - a practical, tangible way to find calm in our busy lives. There's also the added bonus of creating unique jewellery pieces that often become conversation starters or meaningful gifts.

Happy beading!
