Beading – Essential Tools and Supplies

Beading is an easy hobby to get started with, as there's really only three things you need to get started – beads, needle and thread!

This blog covers the essentials to get started, along with some helpful tools and accessories to take your projects to the next level.

The Basics

To begin your beading journey, you only need a few key materials:

1. Beads

The most important component of your beading project!

Beads come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Of course, we love, Miyuki Delica beads because of their uniform size and high-quality finish. You can start with a single tube or bundle of your favourite colours to practice and experiment.

2. Needle

Beading needles are thin and flexible, allowing you to pass through small bead holes multiple times. We offer suitable needles for using Miyuki Delicas, but you can find longer or shorter options depending on your preference.

3. Thread

The right thread is crucial for holding your beads securely. Nylon beading threads, such as Miyuki Nylon Thread, are durable and easy to work with. It’s strong enough to hold up to intricate designs while being flexible enough to create smooth patterns.

Tools and Accessories to Enhance Your Beading Projects

Once you've mastered the basics, you might want to explore more tools and accessories to expand your beading possibilities.

1. Findings

Findings are the hardware that completes your jewelry pieces. This includes items like clasps, jump rings, ear wires, and crimps. These tiny components make it easy to turn your beaded designs into wearable accessories.

2. Beading Loom

If you want to try more intricate patterns, a beading loom is a great tool to add to your kit. Looms make it easier to create wide, flat designs, such as bracelets or belts, with a uniform and structured look.

3. Beading Mat

A beading mat is a simple yet handy accessory that provides a soft surface for working with beads. It prevents them from rolling around and makes it easier to pick up your beads as you work.

4. Jewellery Wire

For those looking to create more structured designs or wire-wrapped jewellery, investing in jewellery wire is essential. Wire comes in various gauges, with thinner wires (like 24-28 gauge) being ideal for wrapping, and thicker wires (18-22 gauge) offering more structure for bracelets or rings.

5. Pliers

A good pair of round-nose pliers and flat-nose pliers will make handling wire and findings much easier. You’ll use them to open and close jump rings, form loops, and secure clasps in place.

Whether you're sticking to the basics or experimenting with new tools, beading is a rewarding craft. With just beads, a needle, and some thread, you can create beautiful designs. As you grow more confident, you can add findings, wire, and tools like a loom to expand your creative options.
